When to do an Engine Overhaul

on April 11, 2014

You would probably have heard of “engine overhaul”, but do you know what it means? Before we go into details of when you should get an engine overhaul and how you should handle the process, let’s first understand what an engine overhaul is. The engine is the part of your car that’s responsible for burning fuel in a controlled environment to produce the power that’s used to run your car. Depending on the complexity and capacity of the engine, it contains hundreds and sometimes even thousands of moving parts. After prolonged use, these internal parts wear out. An engine overhaul is the process of replacing all worn out internal engine parts. Any part that needs cleaning is also cleaned so that the engine functions efficiently.

The process is very delicate and should be left to professionals. Nonetheless, the benefits are many and very distinct. Telling the difference after the overhaul is almost assured. Here are some of these benefits:

  • No compression loss hence the engine is able to produce more power.
  • Lower consumption of oil hence it’s cheaper to run the vehicle.
  • No production of the dark sooty smoke that results from the consumption of oil.
  • No environmental pollution.

However, the big question is: how do you know when to do an overhaul before it is too late? Here are the pointers:

  1. 1.       Knocking Sound. When you have a car you use daily, you will be familiar with the sounds it makes. This being said, hearing a knocking sound when you run your car is one of the obvious ways to tell that you need an engine overhaul. However, it’s important to note that this knocking sound can be caused by a variety of reasons, from something as simple as the need for oil change to the more complex need for engine overhaul. Observe the sound. If it is something new, check your service date. If your car is not due for service, then it is time to have your engine checked as this can be an indication that you will need an engine overhaul.
  2. 2.       Oil Consumption. Oil consumption is something we observe all the time. It is one of the basic ways you can ensure that your car is in good shape. If the oil levels get too low, it can cause engine damage. This is why you have to always make sure that you take your car for service after every 4000 kilometres. You should change oil because it’s dirty, not because it’s getting low. This is a known indication when to do an engine overhaul because it means there is something wrong with the engine.
  3. 3.       Production of Smoke. Observing the smoke that is coming out of your tailpipe is a good way to tell when to do an engine overhaul as well. When you start your car in the morning, stand behind it and observe the colour of the smoke coming out. Too much bluish smoke can indicate that you are burning too much oil. When the oil level is higher than maximum level on the dipstick, this may happen. Before concluding that you need an engine overhaul, check the oil level first. Too much white smoke, on the other hand, can pertain to your head gasket being blown. Either way, it will be important that you bring your car to its mechanic right away. It may not always mean that you will need an engine overhaul, but it will surely need fixing and hence you must act on it right away.

Our cars form a vital part of our everyday lives as it makes it easy for us to go to places. Making sure we know it well will not only make our lives easier, but it will also ensure that our car will function well for a longer period of time. In summary, you will get more out of your precious and prized vehicle over a longer period of time.
